Most of us probably like getting the most we can for our money. Frequent travelers will definitely agree with the statement as they really want to feel "at home" when staying at hotels and pay as less as possible for their comfort. Here are a few secrets, or tips, about hotel pricing and hotel policy by using which you can save some money and make a hotel your "home away from home".
Secret #1
Check the official website of the chosen hotel and compare the deals and discounts directly from the hotel.
This may sound strange, but many travelers skip this step preferring to use various online services to book hotels. Of course, getting the best rate may require a phone call to the hotel to confirm availability. In this case it is better calling the hotel's local number than the 800 number, which usually links callers to a call center that can offer standard room rates. Call the hotel directly and try to speak either with the Manager on Duty, the General Manager or with Director of Sales. These people can negotiate room rates, while reservation desk staff can't. So, don't waste time calling the hotel and asking for the reservation desks.
Secret #2
Make reservations by phone in the evening, right after 6 p.m.
Some rooms are offered at bargain rates: these are "no-show" reservations that were unsecured by a credit card.
Secret #3
You can get a room even when hotel to have no vacancies.
Some of the hotel rooms can be listed as "out-of-order" due to various troubles with the furniture, plumbing or whatever. If you are willing to take one of those "out-of-order" rooms call the hotel manager and ask for a room that has minor problems.
Secret #4
Negotiate.
Give it a try! It never hurts to ask! You can get an upgrade even though you booked with a discounter. Just remember that old saying about attracting more bees with honey than vinegar and probably your friendly behavior will be rewarded handily.
Secret #5
Tip hotel maids.
This is a good way to show your appreciation for their invisible services during your stay. Tip correctly and ensure the housekeeping staff will take special care with your hotel room. Here are simple rules of correct tipping:
- tip daily; - mark your tips clearly; - leave your tips in an obvious place; -tip according to service and hotel type.
Secret #6
Beware of germs!
Certain items in hotel rooms rarely get cleaned. These include telephones, TV remote controls and alarm clocks. Moreover, not all the bedding in hotel rooms is changed after each hotel guest. While the bed linen may be changed after each stay, the blankets and top covers aren't changed unless they are spotted or soiled. So, think twice before lying down stark naked on your hotel bed. Remove bedspreads from the beds and travel with a package of antibacterial wipes.
Secret #7
Take care of protecting yourself and your valuables.
It's no secret that crime is common in hotels. Even in top-end hotels your possessions can be stolen right in the lobby and strangers can try to enter your hotel room. Keep safety rules in mind.
