Bucharest
Bucharest (“Bucurie”, Romanian for «joy») is a delightful 500-year-old city, the capital of Romania. It was named as "the Paris of the Balkans", because wide boulevards with three-lined traffic, parks with lakes, pompous public buildings, imposing monuments make an atmosphere of “Small Paris”. Now Bucharest is a modern metropolis with extremely rich history.
The most interesting place there is Calea Victoriei, where all visitors of Bucharest are advised to go. You can find here The National Museum of History, The Romanian Athenaeum and The Royal Palace known also as The National Art Museum, George Enescu Palace and The Museum of Art Collections. It’s also famous for the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon - Parliament Palace, or, as it’s also called, "House of the People", which is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Bucharest is known for its first open-air ethnographic museum - the Village Museum, located on the bank of the Lake Herastrau, and for numerous churches. They are remarkable for their simplicity of forms and colors that is a real Romanian architectural style. The most popular are Church of St. Gheorghe on Magheru, Cretulescu Church on Calea Victoriei, Antim Monastery close to The Arch of Triumph, and Patriachat Church on the Mitropoliei Hill in Unirii Square.
And certainly! Haven’t you ever heard about Count Dracula? Of course, you will see the ruins of the palace built in the 1500s by Vlad Tepes – famous all over the world as Vlad Dracula, now his palace is the Old Princely Court Museum. Bucharest became the capital at the time Vlad Tepes was ruling the country. His contemporary historians, due to his explosive temper, didn’t put it straight whether he really used to drink human blood, but if he did, taking into account the number of people he had slaughtered, thirst wasn’t worrying him a lot.
Although many buildings and districts in Bucharest were damaged or destroyed by war, earthquakes and Nicolae Ceausescu's program of systematization, many survived and it’s very interesting to walk from Bucharest apartments to see “alive” history. Strolling along the city you will be able to walk in many good, cheap restaurants, and there are bars and clubs to suit every taste and budget. A great advantage of the city is that all cheap hotels in Bucharest are located in the picturesque and convenient places for anyone’s choice: for example, near the lake Baneasa, or in the chief seat of commerce “Charles de Gaule square” near the Herastrau Park. Searching for convenient accommodation you may be sure that you’ll find cheap Bucharest hotels or Bucharest apartments, rooms, accommodations, apartments for rent in Bucharest not far from airport, railway station, tube, bus stop, any transport nodes you want. One more advantage is that a tourist can find cheap rooms in Bucharest even in the mid-summer without difficulties. The city also has several 5 stars hotels in Bucharest and many budget accommodations in Bucharest.
Walking over Bucharest you will be surprised with architectural features of French and French-trained architects, which remodeled the city in the late 19th century. Especially parks will impress you with lines of benches, hosts of lovers, readers, dog-walkers and old couples. At the same moment you can feel to the full that Bucharest is the city of contrasts: old churches adjoin buildings of times of Socialism.
For the people who believe that even a rest should be dynamic, Bucharest offers not only its architecture but also casinos located in 18th and 19th century palaces and mansions, where guests can play blackjack, poker, craps, baccarat, roulette and dance all night if they wish so. They will find cafes, restaurants, nightclubs popular in the evening in the Herastrau Park. Although there is no really centre for the nightlife, but it’s mainly concentrated around the three main piatas of Romana, Universitatea and Unirii.
Bucharest, with its culture born at the intersection of Western and Eastern impacts, with art galleries and nightlife pulsating in clubs, jazz clubs, hip nightclubs and casinos, is a unique source of impressions for any tourist.
