Bangkok
Bangkok is a capital and main city of Thailand. Thais themselves call it Krung Thep conversationally, because its official name consists of drive-anyone-crazy twenty words. It is, by the way, the longest city name in the world, officially registered in the Guinness Books of Records.
If some aliens came to the Earth and asked someone a question ‘What is the most contrastful city on this planet?’, ‘Bangkok’ would undoubtfully be the right answer. Here the trains run up in the sky passing the Buddhist wats (temples), which are neighbouring modern glass-and-steel skyscrapers, flown around somewhere at their feet by schools of cars, buses and tuk-tuks.
No wander, Bangkok has become one of the most-visited tourist attractions of Asia in recent 20 years. The number of tourists is increasing year by year, and so does the number of cheap hotels in Bangkok
There are lots of them in Bangkok. The general rule with typical cheap Bangkok hotel is: you have all luxury and comfort of a Western hotel for just a fraction of the cost. Apartments in Bangkok cost way less than that in Europe or in the US. And the service in most cases is unbelievably good. One can find a Bangkok hotel everywhere in Bangkok: even in the Suvarnabhumi Airport there are several of them. They range in terms of the cost as well: luxury hotels, 5 star hotels in Bangkok neighbour peacefully with budget Bangkok accommodations and youth and student hostels in Bangkok. Just don’t forget that the inflow of tourists is huge, and booking beforehand helps a lot.
There are a lot of ways to entertain oneself in Bangkok. You may ride down the Chao Phraya River by boat, or travel through the city in a sky train, or have a nearly-crazy motorcycle-taxi tour, or just stroll along the old part of the city contemplating the old wats and the Royal Palace (Thailand is a Kingdom with a ruling King, by the way). You can also visit one of numerous massage-shops, which the city is famous for. There are also a lot of parks in this city, so if touristing bores you – which is rather unlikely – you can just sit there back and relax, enjoying silence and shadow.
Despite being a wonderful place in the broad daylight, Bangkok is most magnificient at night. Hundreds of bars and other similar entertainments are there ready for you and especially for your money.
Visiting Bangkok markets, which occupy the whole neighbourhoods, is one more ‘must’ for self-respecting tourist. Do that and you will have a lot of souvenirs, which will remind you of a wonderful time in Bangkok, this Pearl of Asia, as it is.
