Athens
Welcome to Athens, the city where legends and real history are twisted in a way you wouldn’t tell them apart. The city is densely populated and crowded with tourists who seek for combination of aesthetic pleasure from admiration of historical sights and hot summer sandy beaches. The climate in Athens is extremely continental with hot summer and cold winter and the lack of space in the city is well felt especially during the peak season that starts from the middle of spring till late autumn. By the way, the situation was improved thanks to Olympic Games 2004 when the city undergone a great modernization and rehabilitation, traffic system was improved as well. The latter is not so critical if you plan to purposely stay at, let’s say, central part of Athens or close to the sea line, because strolling would be a very useful alternative to high-strung city traffic. A number of new large and splendid Athens hotels were built and most of the existing Athens hotels were renovated during mentioned modernization. Cheap Athens hotels and Athens hostels can be easily found in all parts of the city, including the center or the close to beach stripes. Please note we are not to give you an advice, as most do, to visit Athens in the beginning of spring or late autumn in order to get cheapest rates in Athens hotels. We do understand that most of the tourists intend to enjoy the comfortable sunbathing and swimming in the warm Greek waters, so we frankly warn them to be ready for some extra “summer fee” in their Athens hotels or any other type of Athens accommodation. Anyway, basing on our experience we figure that if you compare Athens hotels and their rates with those of Athens hostels you will find out that Athens hostels are the cheapest Athens accommodation especially if you are tied to a certain budget.
Remember that most of the beaches in Athens area are private and you will have to pay a certain admission fee, but this will guarantee you clean sand and clear water. There is a great deal of possibilities to plan you leisure in Athens and in Greece as a whole. The number of places to see is countless, but we suggest that you start with Acropolis – world famous ancient city with Parthenon and proceed with Athens museums. If you feel you’ve had enough of the city, take a guided bus tour to the villages and sights around Athens. Enjoy the local cuisine and wines in restaurants and cafes, the number of which is really amazing in Athens; do some shopping or sink into the vivid nightlife of Athens; in other words, you won’t get bored in Athens!
