Hotel Solar dos Mascarenhas
The Hotel Solar dos Mascarenhas was created to breathe life back into the customs, experiences, flavours and the very best the Alentejo has to offer.
Vila Viçosa has been home to poets, kings, queens, princes and princesses. The hotel stands in one of the town narrow lanes of whitewashed houses, just metres from the Ducal Palace.
Built in the 16th Century by members of the Portuguese court when Vila Viçosa was still the home of the Royal House of Bragança, the Solar dos Mascarenha guards centuries of history within its walls. Effortlessly combining the present with the past, the hotel building was redesigned by architect João Paulo Ferreira, endowing it with modernity and 18 rooms and 4 suites in the manor house old gardens. Each accommodation unit has its own bathroom, air-conditioning, LCD TV, Internet access and direct-line telephone.
Taking his inspiration from the creativity of the Alentejo gastronomy and flavours from various cultures, Chef Cláudio Cardoso conjures up a tantalising menu in the Restaurante do Pao, aptly complementing the hotel quality services. Located in a region in which the local cuisine proves a powerful attraction in its own right, the Solar is more than prepared to meet this challenge.
