Tallinn
Tallinn is the capital of Estonia. It was named Reval till 1919 and then used several ones, until the present name was selected in 1933. The Old Town of Tallinn is included in the List of World Heritage by UNESCO. Tallinn is a great mix of the new and the old, as there are business centres and modern skyscrapers right near the Old Town. In this place you'll find a number of cultural and public institutions such as House of Parliament, the Government Residention, the "Estonia" theatre, National library, museums and etc.
Right in the Old Town there are the City Hall and many churches among buildings and streets system of the Middle Ages. Tourists necessarily should visit the Toompea - a part of the Old Town named after castle of the Toompea knights’ order - where they will be able to see one of the Estonian symbols, the flag on the Tall Herman tower (Pikk Hermann).Among other sights it's worth to see Catherine palace in Baroque style with the park and famous monument "Mermaid" in memory of seamen, the quaters Syuda-Tatari and Rotermann, and Kassissaba territory. There is a beautiful view on the Old City, harbour and the sea from the park, which was and is the rest-and-walk place of citizens and tourists.
And now, having known the main sights, everybody begins to think what place will be the best to stay. You can find here a cheap Tallinn hotel with any requirements you want. For example, you can choose a Tallinn apartment on the shore and not far from the Old Town, or choose a cheap hotel in the centre of Tallinn with all facilities and elegant classic interior. Many cheapest hotels in Tallinn are located in the medieval buildings. Whatever budget accommodation in Tallinn you choose, its location will be convenient for walking in the city and terms of staying there are very adaptable: your dog, for instance, may live with you in your room. You also will find TV, Internet, phone, sauna, Jacuzzi, massage, bar, night club available as well as a variety of restaurants with cuisine of any nation and even doctor-in-call.
And after having a good rest in your room, walk in the unique Flower Village, where streets mainly bear names of flowers and birds, and in the greenest district - Kriistine - with natural gardens and parks protected by the Government. The only Zoo in Estonia, concert centre of the Eurovision song contest of 2002, the museum in the open air, the same as beaches and lakes will allow nobody to get bored in Tallinn.
In spite of the fact that Tallinn is an industrial, business and tourism centre of Estonia, you'll be surprised with the real fortress wall which survived till nowadays. If you are going to walk without a guide then remember: small streets get mixed up very unpredictably, as the very idea of town-planning was to confuse the enemy troops if they had possibly broken into the town, and many of them indeed found it very effectively-working.
But not only day-Tallinn can be interesting to the tourists: night-Tallinn invites visitors to discos, jazz clubs, small cozy bars in medieval houses. And don't miss a chance to taste milk soup, national honey-beer and mulled wine with a lemon lick and spices. If someone wants to plunge into olden times, one will find even medieval cuisine in Tallinn. Also you are utterly recommended to buy a bottle of Old Tallinn liqueur (‘Vana Tallinn’ in Estonian) to savor it when back home. And if you like Tallinn, which you’ll most probably do, throw a coin to the Baltic Sea to return here.
